Make a cup with the slab technique
Make a cup with the slab technique – A Step-by-Step Guide
Materials:
- Clay
- Rolling pin
- Cutting knife or clay cutter
- Slip (clay glue)
- Scoring tool or spatula
- Brush
- Sponge
1. Preparation
- Roll out the clay evenly to a thickness of 5-6 mm. Use guide sticks or spacers for uniform thickness.
- Cut a rectangle for the cup’s sides (adjust the size to fit your desired cup).
- Cut a circle for the base (a template or cookie cutter can be helpful).
2. Assembling the Cup
- Let the clay dry slightly until leather-hard—this makes it easier to handle.
- Shape the rectangle into a cylinder, overlapping the edges slightly.
- Cut diagonally through both overlapping layers for a precise seam.
- Score both ends and apply slip.
- Press the edges together and smooth the seam with your fingers or a tool.
3. Attaching the Base
- Score the bottom edge of the cylinder and the circle where they will be joined.
- Apply slip to both scored areas.
- Place the cup onto the base and gently press it down to ensure contact.
- For extra strength, roll a thin coil of clay, place it inside along the seam, and smooth it into both the walls and base.
4. Adding a Handle (Optional)
- Shape a handle and let it dry slightly so it holds its shape.
- Score both the cup (where the handle will be attached) and the handle.
- Apply slip and press the handle onto the cup.
- Move the handle slightly back and forth until you feel resistance—this improves adhesion.
- Use a brush to smooth slip around the joint.
5. Finishing Touches
- Smooth all seams and any rough areas with your fingers or a damp sponge.
- Refine the shape and edges to get a clean finish.
